DC’s Legends of Tomorrow Special Video Presentation and Q&A

After saving the world-and all of time-from the immortal madman Vandal Savage, then bidding farewell to two of their fellow comrades, Hawkman and Hawkgirl, the Legends received an unexpected visit from a mysterious new ally, Rex Tyler, who gives the team a brand new mission. What that mission is, how the Justice Society of America will factor in, and who will be aboard the Waverider when The CW’s Super Hero team-up series returns for its second season are questions that the cast and creative team will seek to answer when they descend on San Diego for their second visit to Comic-Con. From Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow airs Thursdays at 8/7c on The CW, and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow: The Complete First Season will be released on Blu-ray combo pack, DVD and Digital HD on August 23.

Caity Lotz for Venice Magazine

Caity Lotz has that don’t-mess-with-me stare on lock. If you’ve ever caught her as Sara Lance in the CW shows “Arrow” and “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow,” then you’ve been on the receiving end of her glassy, almost translucent, blue-eyed gaze, lasering right through your laptop or TV screen, shielding something sinister or, at least, a rock-hard mental toughness. That steely gaze can just as easily melt into all freckles and smiley optic-white teeth, a lighthearted countenance “Mad Men” fans may recognize from Lotz’s memorable turn as Anna Draper’s niece, the beguiling Berkeley-ite Stephanie Horton. This San Diego native’s chameleonic glare can wither or woo—but that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Let’s back up a bit. For possessing such an emotive face, Lotz never dreamed of lighting up the silver screen. “I didn’t even think about acting until I took classes when I was 21,” Lotz, 29, says over the phone from her home in Los Angeles (where she’s on hiatus from filming “Legends of Tomorrow”). Her path to wooing Don Draper and kicking some serious butt on the CW is fairly unusual. “No one in my family is in the arts—not even close,” she laughs. Her father is a malpractice attorney; her mother, a housewife; and her only sibling, a brother, is a doctor. “I’m the black sheep in that sense.”

Caity Lotz has worn many hats in her career as an entertainer. Starting out as a dancer she toured with Avril Lavigne, Lady Gaga and appeared in a whole host of music videos for some of the biggest names in the industry. Caity then joined girl-group Soccx who enjoyed two top ten hit singles in Germany. Despite all of Caity’s success as a dancer and musician, it was her acting performances as Sara Lance on the hit TV shows Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow which finally saw Caity step out of the shadows and into the limelight.

We caught up with Caity to find out about her journey as a performer and just what it takes to play a hardened assassin on screen.

When did you first realize that acting was the dream?

I didn’t start acting until I was 21. Before that I was a dancer and in a singing group. I never pictured myself as an actor or even having a career as a performer. No one I knew had a job like that so I didn’t know that was an option. But I just followed the excitement and worked hard and I ended up being really fucking lucky because now I get paid to pretend to be an assassin.
